Studio Lighting

Updated: Jun 16, 2022

In class we discussed different types of light modifiers and what they do to a subject. We then went to the studio to experiment with the lighting modifiers available.

Lindsay Adler

Lindsay is a who is a fashion and beauty photographer who focuses on mainly editorial and lighting. A lot of her work is to do with lighting and how it looks on people.

I really like this picture because of the lighting. The lighting hits really specific places on the subject including the left side of the forehead, the right shoulder and in a triangle under the left eye. The lighting hitting under the left eye is called rembrandt lighting. The blue light really stands out on the subjects dark skin and really compliments it.

This picture of Lindsay's really stood out to me because of the shadows. The lines down her face are interesting to look at because they are only on her face. The shadows look like they could've been created with a fork because they stop directly at her jawline. They are very rigid lines. I like how Lindsay got the subjects eyes both in the light and they really stand out.

In this picture the main subject has a halo like lighting above their head. You can see the light that was used to create the picture in the background slightly and I think this really adds something to the picture.

This picture of somebody in my class was taken by me and the lighting method is split. Although it is a good picture it could of been better via the lighting. The left side is brighter than the right but its not evenly distributed in a way that looks aesthetically pleasing at all.

In this picture you can see where the lighting is coming from and there are shadows visible and the soft box can been seen. The background can also been seen which in my opinion adds character to the picture.

Clamshell lighting

First set of pictures

These are two of the first clamshell lighting pictures I took. Neither of them are right but were good attempts at it. The lights were in the wrong places. In the first one where the subject is looking to the side the lights were at an in front low and from the side high sort of angle. The background is overexposed and she is rather yellow. The second one the lighting is from a front low and back high which I just wanted to see how it would turn out. The subjects yellowness can also be down to skin tone which is a majoring factor in how a person can look in a picture.

Second pictures

These pictures are both clamshell lighting. It took a lot of trial and error to get it right with turning off different lights and angling them differently. In the end I got one of my peers to help and she held the bottom light in a guitar sort of position. This really helped to get the lighting right. In the first image the subject is blinking, which I'm not a fan of but it was the last picture and both of us were tired from all of the posing and moving lights around. The last image is my personal favourite because it came out the best. I got good feedback from my tutor about it which gave me the confidence to think I can do it again with less help.

Split Lighting

These are the split lighting pictures that turned out right. There was a lot of trial and error and I took a few hundred pictures to get them as best I could. I think that the bottom one is a better example as the subjects head is straight so you can see where the line is. The top picture is still a good picture but because of the subjects head angle the light is not where I want it to be.

Short Lighting

The short lighting pictures that I took turned out really well. They were not as hard to take as the split lighting pictures. In my opinion these pictured turned out really well and definitely better than expected.

The light in the first picture really hits the subjects eye in a way that really makes the colour stand out. The subject has shadow lines on her face from the hem of her scarf. I think this looks really good because its something else to look at in the picture.

The second picture is rather noisy but I still like it and think that adds character and flavour to the picture. the lighting. There are lots of small details that really stand out if you look closely including the subject eyelashes and her hair at the top of her scarf.
