Photojournalism Planning

Updated: Jun 16, 2022

For this assignment we are able to write about anything we like. It has to be something that tells a story and a picture that is relevant and makes sense with what has been written.

For this assignment I will interview my nan on my moms side. I will aske her about her life growing up and her experience as a single mother of six kids.

Questions I will ask

  • When and where she was born?

  • What it was like growing up?

  • Foods eaten growing up?

  • Friends

  • Living in England

Pictures I will take

  • Candid picture of my nan doing stuff around her home

  • A picture of my nan and her kids altogether

  • Separate picture of my aunts and uncle

I have scrapped the idea of talking about my nan for this assignment because I didn't get any of the information I needed. I went to her home and completely forgot what I was supposed to do. I did take pictures of her but I didn't like how they looked that much. We just ended up having a good time together.

My new photojournalism idea will be about Sparkhill, the area I live in. I have been out to take pictures already and I like the way they look and think that they are an accurate representation of the area.

I will talk about the history of the area and the people that lived here. I will ask my mom for some of this information as she has lived here for a long time. I will talk to my neighbours and ask how they feel about the area and what could be better about it. I will also talk about the diversity and the different types of food that are available

Artist research:

Don McCullin

Don grew un Finsbury park in London. He showed a talent for drawing at the secondary school he attended. He left school at 15 with no qualifications.

I like these two pictures of Don's because they are in black and white. They both show a lot pf detail because of the black ands white effect. In the first picture the man looks like he could be homeless and really struggling in life. He has a lot of forehead wrinkles which suggests that he is under a lot of stress.

The second picture the man is most likely a soldier and he looks rather war torn and dirty. He is in uniform which could mean he is still in the war.

Margaret Bourke Wright

Margaret has taken a lot of war pictures. Both of these pictures are from that era. The first picture is still relevant to today because of the pandemic. The second picture is a picture of a woman taking a picture. Talk about inception!!!

Gordon Parks

Both of these pictures are of people which I really enjoy. The first one is of two black children and a white child. at this time the picture was taken segregation was taking place and they weren't supposed to be together. The picture has a lot of impact showing the power of friendship. The second picture is of a lone woman. Given how she is dressed she might be a nun who is going about some daily errands.
