Artist Research (Art Of Seeing)

Richard Billingham

Richard is a photographer along with a few other creatives. One off his projects was about his parents, home life and how he grew up. I personally enjoy his works as I feel it tells a story. His mother, Liz was violent towards her alcoholic spouse, Ray. The pictures Richard took were supposed to be painting studies but they now have their own life showcasing Richards parents and home.

Richard:

Image 1:

This image shows Richards violent mother seemingly threatening Ray, her victim spouse.

This makes me feel for him because he has to rely on her for his alcohol addiction which is something he is no longer in control of. Liz, Rays mom has her fist up looking ready to lash out and hit.

Image 2:

This picture shows Ray, Richards dad throwing the family cat in a fit of anger.

Paul Strand

Paul, an American photographer helped to get photography seen as an art form. He also helped to found the Photo league in the 1920's. Most of his work is personally rather bland. This is because they are all similar shades/tones. I really like his portrait work because the subject is a person dressed in a certain way weather it be uniform or a nightgown and they have their own story that can be interpreted any way by the viewer.

Paul:

Image 1:

This image is of an elderly and worked pair of hands. I like it because we don't know anything about this person except that they have worked with their hands throughout life. The hands also seem weather worn. The hands are placed nice and evenly on the persons lap. This makes the image more nice to look at.

Image 2

This is an abstract image and we don't know what it is of which I really enjoy. The lines and shadows of this picture are really nice to look at. Its a good picture because all of the lines are going in the same direction, the lines also start from smallest to biggest, top to bottom which for aesthetic reasons is good to look at . i like how they are also going opposite on something that looks like a cushion maybe or something resting on the floor.

Beate Gutshowe

Beate, from Germany is a contemporary photographer. One of her projects is taking pictures of parks and rearranging them to change the perspective. In my opinion her pictures give the same energy as abstract paintings. She takes multiple shots from different angles and edits them together to change how the park looks. I personally like the editing of her images as they are very out of perspective and you have to take a closer look at them to see the detail and what is going on.

Beate:

Image 1:

The different angles of the park reconstructed to make a new picture. the picture is like a jigsaw because it is not a whole image. It almost looks like painting which is an aspect I really love. I like that it is edited in a way that that makes its hard to tell what is wrong with it and why it looks the way it does.

Image 2:

This picture looks odd because of the reconstruction of it, the plants look like they're not supposed to be there. The picture looks photoshopped, but in a way that makes it look like that picture was taken like that.
